Phoridae project
Invitation
Scuttle flies (Phoridae) are of considerable forensic importance. Due to their small size (<6 mm) they are particularly relevant for bodies in shallow graves, concealed (e.g. wrapped or placed in a container) or in confined spaces where they are inaccessible to larger flies such as blow flies (Calliphoridae). However, scuttle flies are very challenging to identify and are often overlooked in forensic studies. We have expertise in their identification. In this project we aim to increase the use of this important fly family by providing a new, well-illustrated identification guide to European Phoridae of forensic importance. We are asking colleagues for help with accessing specimens from this family. If you have any unidentified Phoridae waiting in a drawer or pushed to the back of the cupboard we would welcome them. We will identify them and share the results with you. We want to include all forensically relevant species in our identification guide. There may be some discoveries to be made along the way, and we will liaise with collectors regarding publication of such findings. We request, when possible, for specimens to be donated to the Natural History Museum in London, where we are based, for the ease of access and long-term preservation of vouchers. If you can help us by providing specimens associated with vertebrate carrion and human corpses, please contact Olga Sivell (o.sivell@nhm.ac.uk) for more information
